The opening shot of most Tokyo trips. The world's busiest pedestrian crossing is the bait — but the real Shibuya is the smaller streets behind it. Nonbei Yokochō's lantern-lit drinking alley, Center Gai after dark, and the slower design pocket creeping uphill into Tomigaya.
Two cities back-to-back. West Shinjuku is glass towers and the free observatory at the Metropolitan Government Building; east Shinjuku is Kabukichō neon and the 200 shotgun bars of Golden Gai. Easy to spend a whole night here without leaving a single block.

Tokyo before the neon. Sensō-ji is the city's oldest temple — smoke from the incense cauldron still drifting over Nakamise Street's century-old snack shops. Arrive by 8am for the quiet version, or come back at night when the temple is empty and lit.
Tokyo at its loudest. Six-storey arcades, electronics shops stacked floor by floor, and the visual saturation that gave the district its name. Not every traveller needs Akihabara — but for anyone who came partly for Japan's pop culture, this is its centre of gravity.
Two Harajukus side by side. Takeshita Street is the famous one — neon, crêpes, teen fashion. Most design-led travellers skip past it to the parallel Cat Street, or up the cedar paths into Meiji Shrine, the city's largest forested calm.
Tokyo has thirteen subway lines plus JR, but as a visitor you'll mostly use these four. The Yamanote loops the city; almost everything worth visiting sits on it or one stop inside. The Metro fills the middle. JR cuts east-west. Treat this as a schematic, not a route planner.
Tokyo has two airports, and the choice is a 30-minute difference at one end of your trip — and often a few hundred yen and a more comfortable layout at the other. Most travellers don't get the choice. When you do, take it.
Closer, newer, faster into the city. Most flights from East Asia land here, and increasingly the long-haul ones too. The Keikyū line and the Tokyo Monorail both reach central Tokyo in about half an hour. Pick Haneda whenever you can — for late-night arrivals especially, it's the difference between a quick train and a long, expensive trip.
Tokyo's older international airport, an hour out east in Chiba. Most long-haul flights still land here. The Narita Express runs straight into Tokyo Station, Shibuya and Shinjuku; the Keisei Skyliner is slightly slower and roughly half the price. If you land after 21:00 the train options dry up quickly — check before you book.
