How seasons work by hemisphere
Earth’s seasons are driven by axial tilt, not distance from the Sun. As Earth orbits the Sun, each hemisphere takes turns receiving more direct sunlight. That’s why when it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s typically winter in the Southern Hemisphere (and vice versa).
- March Equinox – starts Spring (North) / Autumn (South)
- June Solstice – starts Summer (North) / Winter (South)
- September Equinox – starts Autumn (North) / Spring (South)
- December Solstice – starts Winter (North) / Summer (South)
Dates can vary slightly each year. This tool uses standard seasonal boundaries for clear, consistent results.
